Yamanochaya, HakoneWe had long wanted to stay in a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) but plans had never worked out. With a trip to Japan planned, including JAL first class, the Hyatt Regency Hakone and Andaz Tokyo, we at last had reason to book a night. Our criteria were that the ryokan had to be near Hakone, provide in-room dining and have a private outdoor onsen attached to the room. Booking at quite a late date during sakura season meant that choices were slightly limited and some options were too expensive. However, after finding the Ryokan Collection website, we settled on Yamanochaya and were delighted with our choice.
We chose to book a special room C (Himeshara) with private tub on the balcony. This was confirmed in advance by the ryokan, who also communicated to make sure they understood our dietary requirements. Upon arrival, we were somewhat surprised to be told we couldn't check in until 3 and left upstairs to wait the 3 hours until this time. Eventually, we attracted attention and were able to get some green tea whilst we waited and used the free wifi. |

Overall impression
Staying in a ryokan is a quintessential Japanese experience and one we whole-heartedly recommend. Yamanochaya gave us the experience we were looking for - traditional Japanese, wonderful food, our own private onsen and great surroundings. At night, we sat in the warm water, listening to the stream below. For those who need it, wifi was a reasonable speed and service was efficient although not particularly warm. This was a great retreat from Tokyo and provided time to spend together as a couple. Would we return? Yes, the service was perfect although cold from a Western point of view, this was a sophisticated stay and perfect for when you need to be isolated from the craziness of Tokyo.
