Sunday Brunch at The ChurchillThe Montagu Restaurant occupies a prominent position on the ground floor of The Hyatt Regency London - The Churchill. Overlooking Portman Square, it can seat about 60 in the main area but, on occasion, some of the adjacent seating in the vestibule area will be pressed into service to provide extra pace for Sunday brunch which is rightly popular. The Montagu functions not only as the house restaurant, offering breakfast, lunch and dinner to hotel guests but also as a neighbourhood eatery for the surprisingly large number who live in a part of London more notable for shopping. Being within easy walking distance of Mayfair and Marylebone village gives it a potentially large local population. It is evident from the large family groups we have witnessed at Sunday brunch that it is succeeding in attracting locals (always a good sign in a restaurant).
I am almost reluctant to write this report because it may encourage more people to book tables and we already sometimes find it difficult to find space unless we book well in advance. The Montagu only takes bookings up to a month in advance and we sometimes find we have missed the boat if we don't book straight away. The popularity is perfectly understandable as Brunch represents great value for money in this part of the world. Children under 6 eat free, 6-16 year olds can sate themselves at £32.50 each, whilst adults pay £65 including limitless Pommery Brut Champagne. If you are one of those strange creatures who don't like champagne, there are good quality red and white house wines included and of course, water and other soft drinks. |

So to the food. Where to start? Obviously with the starters! Well no actually, first go inspect the deserts. My personal favourite is the cherry pie lathered in chocolate sauce (or melted chocolate!). It is important to know how much space you will need for the desert section before you approach the mouth watering delights of the starter and mains sections.
There you will find a range of traditional treats, little that is out of the ordinary, but all done to perfection. The selection of salad leaves always makes me smile - I love red chicory! Mix your own prawn cocktail, add some smoked salmon and a few roasted peppers. Enjoy the carved joint which changes every week and is always perfectly cooked. The beef looks succulent but sadly I am allergic. There is always a very interesting fish dish, some tender lamb and of course vegetarian options. Remember to save yourself for desert though and don't plan anything too energetic for the rest of the day.
