The Great Escape, Siem ReapThe popularity of live room escape games has increased dramatically over the past few years. For those of you who haven't heard about them, they start with you being locked inside a room and you have to solve puzzles to escape - a great test of logic and teamwork. We were surprised to find that such a game existed in Siem Reap and so contacted The Great Escape (the only such game in Cambodia) to try it out.
Booking is easy either on their website, by phone or email (alternatively, contact us) and the price includes a complimentary tuk-tuk pick-up and drop-off. On arrival, the welcome was warm and we were offered bottled water, whilst we chatted about the game and the experiences of Paddy, the owner, who has lived in Cambodia 15 years and still runs kick-boxing clubs in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh. At present, The Great Escape offers a choice of two themed rooms (The Warehouse and the Detective Office), but there are plans to add another two at a later date. |
We chose to play John Monroe's Detective Office. We were taken up to the door and the scene was set: John Monroe was recently murdered and we are being framed as his killers. We have gained access to his office and the aim is to solve clues to clear our name and escape the office before the police arrive to arrest us in 1 hour.
As soon as the clock started ticking, we examined everything in the room and started working on the clues. We aren't going to describe these here as it would spoil your experience, but we made use of the game master on a few occasions to ask for a hint (you are provided with a walkie-talkie). Escaping after 57 minutes with smiles on our faces, we were then shown the one clue we had missed (we solved the final lock by trial and error) and advised that we would receive photos from the CCTV by email. We would definitely recommend The Great Escape - it is the perfect antidote to temple fatigue or if you are searching for a fun activity during rainy season. We will be back to try the other game on our next trip to Siem Reap - it's great fun. |
