Cooking with AngsanaWe love Thai food - the spices, the flavour and the freshness. After the success of a cooking lesson at the Hyatt Hua Hin, it was a no brainer to book further tuition in Bangkok. A quick search online uncovered Angsana, who invites tourists into her home to learn how to cook traditional Thai food. Priced at just 4000 THB for a private lesson for a couple, we jumped at the chance to learn to cook green mango salad, Thai fish cakes, red chicken curry and mango with sticky rice. Booking was easy by email and, despite being delayed, we easily met Angsana outside the BTS Skytrain station, as agreed. A word of warning - the food we cooked contained a lot of chilli (27 hot scuds plus further milder peppers) - delicious but not ideal when travelling, as mentioned on our blog.

We were too busy cooking to take many photos, but it was really interesting seeing a local middle-class home and meeting Angsana's family. Unfortunately, we were unable to visit the market with Angsana, but this is something we would recommend you doing if at all possible. Choose 3-4 dishes from a long list on her website and you will have way too much food for lunch (you are welcome to take a doggy bag away with you). Not only do you learn to cook a meal, but do everything from scratch, including making coconut milk from the fresh flesh. We felt honoured to be allowed into Angsana's home and have often cooked the recipes we learnt. Don't worry - Angsana speaks perfect English and you are provided with written recipes so you can replicate the menu at home - if you can find the ingredients! Cooking with Angsana is one of the stories you will take home from your holiday - we strongly recommend booking a lesson.
